A Celebrated Comeback: Malaka Spice Opens New Doors in Baner

Apr 28

Pune, India: After nearly six years, one of Pune’s most loved Southeast Asian restaurants is reopening in the neighbourhood with an all-new space at Baner Hills. This marks an exciting new chapter for the brand, which has been bringing the flavours of Southeast Asia to the city for close to 29 years.

Founded in 1997 by Cheeru and Praful Chandawarkar, Malaka Spice began as a shared dream. What started with Cheeru’s deep love for cooking and Praful’s leap from investment banking has grown into a restaurant that many Punekars have grown up with.

The new Baner space brings back familiar flavours, but with a refreshed experience. The design draws from the cultures of Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian regions, creating a space that feels warm and immersive.

Over the years, Malaka Spice has quietly shaped Pune’s food scene by introducing people to Southeast Asian cuisine in a way that feels approachable. That continues here, with a strong focus on their farm-to-table philosophy. The menu stays true to what guests love, while celebrating the diversity of the region. Expect everything from fragrant curries and fresh herbs to bold sambals and lip-smacking appetisers. At its heart is the same idea Malaka Spice has always stood for: Inspired Not Imitated.

“Our return to Baner feels incredibly special,” says Ilvika Chandawarkar, Head of Research and Business Development. “For us, Malaka Spice has always been about storytelling. Every dish, every detail you see and experience comes from journeys we’ve made across South east Asia. We bring those travels back to the table, translating them into flavours and textures that our guests can connect with. From the ingredients we source to the way the space is designed, there is a story behind everything. Coming back to Baner feels like completing a circle.”

Guests can now experience Malaka Spice’s signature menu from across Southeast Asia at the newly opened Baner outlet, where the brand continues its commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and warm hospitality.
